After 5 rounds in A1 tournament a leader has been changed. Now S.Novikov is taking clear first place with 4.5 points. Half a point behind are E.Alekseev, E.Tomashevsky and D.Jakovenko. Those who scored 3.5 are A.Khalifman, A.Korotylev (all listed above are of Russia), V.Akopian, Art.Minasian, G.Sargissian (all of Armenia), Wang Hao, Ni Hua (both of China), Z.Almasi, C.Balogh (both of Hungary), A.Aleksandrov (Belarus), Z.Efimenko (Ukraine), V.Iordachescu (Moldova), B.Predojevic (Bosnia), V.Laznicka (Czech Republic) and D.Sadvakasov (Kazakhstan). 17.02.2007 THE HISTORY OF LINARES TOURNAMENTS
The tournaments in Linares started in 1978. In total 23 competitions were held. The first 16 tournaments were one leg round robin events. Since 1998 there are two legs. Last year the tournament for the first time was held on two continents. Garry Kasparov won 9 Linares tournaments – more than any other player. Vassily Ivanchuk and Vladimir Kramnik were triumphant three times. Anatoly Karpov scored two victories. The list of the Linares winners of all years is attached.

16.02.2007 Morelia-Linares opens tonight. Radjabov is substituted by Ivanchuk
Today in Morelia, Mexico at 20:00 (5 AM 17.02 Moscow time) the opening ceremony will take place of the 24th edition of the traditional tournament which before last year has always been held in Linares. The line-up of the participants was: Veselin Topalov (2783), Vishy Anand (2789), Peter Leko (2749), Levon Aronian (2744), Alexander Morozevich (2741), Teimour Radjabov (2729), Peter Svidler (2728), Magnus Carlsen (2690). According to the site SportCom after Teimour Radjabov and his father had been robbed in Mexico and the Mexican organizers had refused to pay them any compensation the grandmaster withdrew from the tournament and left the country. His substitute is the three-time victor of the Linares tournaments Vassily Ivanchuk (2750). The winner will receive 100000 euros, the prize for the last place is 11000 euros. Days of play in the first leg are February 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24 & 25. Each round starts at 15:30 local time (Mexico) which is 00:30 of the following day Moscow time. Days of play in the second leg are March 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 & 10. Each round starts at 15:30 local time (Spain) which is 17:30 Moscow time. One of the winners of Moscow Open 2007 GM Vassily Yemelin will annotate for our readers the best games of each round in the first leg while the winner of the Russian Cup 2006 GM Konstantin Sakaev will do the same in the second leg.

E.Korbut in A2 tournament beat M.Sorokin with White. On Thursday the second round is played. A.Khalifman is White against Y.Kuzubov, E.Alekseev is White against I.Nepomniachtchi, V.Popov is Black against P.Harikrishna. N.Vitiugov plays A.Shomoev.

14.02.2007 AEROFLOT: lists of passengers
Pairings of all four tournaments that start today are announced. N.Vitiugov became the fourth representative of Saint Petersburg in A1 tournament. Here are the pairings of the first round for our players: V.Popov – V.Akopian, S.Halkias – E.Alekseev, T.Gareev – A.Khalifman and Hou Yifan – N.Vitiugov. In A2 tournament E.Korbut plays with White against M.Sorokin. Curiously enough E.Korbut and V.Popov played on Board 1 in their tournaments. R.Kashtanov plays in B tournament, E.Kopasov and I.Potiavin play in C tournament. So far the number of players according to drawing of lots is as follows: A1 – 88, A2 – 138, B – 166, C – 201. 593 players in total including 138 GMs (men and women).
