The International Master Vadim Faibisovich conducts excursions over the regions of Saint Petersburg marking out the places where chess tournaments were held or the leading players of the city lived. 13.02.2007 The dead body of the Lviv master and trainer Yury Privalov was found.
Last weekend on the outskirts of the Pustomity town in the Lviv region the dead body of 49-year-old master of sports and well-known trainer Yury Privalov was found who died of freezing. Among his pupils were Ekaterina Lahno, Muzychuk sisters, Yury Krivoruchko, Nazar Firman and other noted players.

13.02.2007 AEROFLOT: ticket registration
Today the participants of the Aeroflot Open annual festival arrive in Moscow. Tomorrow four tournaments included in its schedule will start. The first event took place in 2002 (first place was shared then by G.Kaidanov, A.Grishuk, A.Aleksandrov, A.Shabalov and V.Milov). The following years the winners were: V.Bologan in 2003, S.Rublevsky in 2004 and E.Sutovsky in 2005. Last year’s edition was won by B.Jobava. Thus the present tournament is the sixth. The winners of four preceding years obtained the right to play in the major international tournament in Dortmund. This year among the registered players of the A1 tournament there are three representatives of Saint Petersburg – E.Alekseev, V.Popov and A.Khalifman. E.Korbut will play in A2 tournament. Aeroflot Open is being held in Izmailovo tourist complex from 14th to 23rd February. The chief organizer is the Executive Director of the Russian Chess Federation A.Bakh.

Today in a detention centre in the Perm region the 12th World Champion Anatoly Karpov gave a simultaneous exhibition to the prisoners. One of them 19 year-old Alexander Osokin sentenced for the murderous assault managed to make a draw. We provide a link to the material with photos of the event.

The 64th Polish Championship is a 14 player all play all. All country’s strongest players take part in the event except for Nos. 1 & 2 K.Miton (2655) and M.Krasenkow (2651). After 3 rounds GM B.Heberla is leading with 2.5 points. GMs T.Markowski, L.Cyborowski and B.Socko and FIDE master R.Lubczynski have 2 points. 10.02.2007 K.E.TALVIK TURNS 100 TODAY!
Today the Saint Petersburg resident Kira Eduardovna Talvik celebrates her 100th birthday! She is the grand-nephew of the eminent 19th century chessplayer Emmanuel Schiffers, the daughter of Eduard Talvik who participated in the 4th All-Russian Tournament in 1906 and the mother of the republican category arbiter, children’s chess teacher Tatiana Pruzhinina. Our congratulations! In the “Chess Petersburg” magazine No.1 (23)/2002 an article was published called “Direct heirs” which told about the unique chess dynasty. We cite its content briefly.

09.02.2007 BORIS GULKO TURNS 60!
Today Boris Gulko celebrates his jubilee. He was the USSR and USA Champion, took part in the Candidates matches, won the medals of the World Team Championships and World Olympiads, Students’ World Championships and European Club Cups. Our congratulations!

The ACP President GM P.Tregubov said yesterday that ACP is going to start an investigation regarding the suspicions of Veselin Topalov getting hints from his manager S.Danailov during the games. Today the “Kommersant” daily publishes on its site a video record showing a strange behaviour of this gentleman at the last year’s tournament in Wijk aan Zee.

Every world champion's creative works draw rapt attention of chess specialists. The great players not only embody the best that chess has accumulated but also predetermine in many respects the directions of its further development. The games of B.Spassky annotated by the Merited Trainer of Russia, Master of Sports Viacheslav Shishmarev were published by "Chess Saint Petersburg" magazine in January 2003 in a special issue "Dedicated to Boris Spassky".
