The runner-up is “Ural” from Ekaterinburg (T.Radjabov, A.Grischuk, A.Shirov, V.Akopian, V.Malakhov, V.Zvjaginsev, A.Motylev and K.Sakaev), bronze medals go to Cheboksary “Elara” (B.Gelfand, E.Bareev, P.Harikrishna, A.Khalifman, I.Nepomniachtchi, V.Belov, A.Korotylev and S.Shipov. In the third round M.Adams defeated L.-D. Nisipeanu, Sh.Mamedyarov - V.Topalov and K.Sasikiran - G.Kamsky. The standings are: Mamedyarov 2,5, Adams and Sasikiran - both 2 points, Nisipeanu 1,5, Kamsky and Topalov - both 0,5. In the 4th round tomorrow: Mamedyarov plays against Nisipeanu, Kamsky against Adams and Sasikiran against Topalov.

Akadij Naiditsch (Germany) won the memorial cup of Geidar Aliev, the first President of Azerbaijan. He scored 7.5 points out of 9. Vadim Malakhatko, playing for Belgium, Loek Van Wely (Netherlands) and Alexey Fedorov (Belarus) have 7 points each. Among 10 chessplayers having 6.5 points is famous English player Nigel Short.

Today we begin publishing a series of articles dedicated to All-Russia chess school. About a quarter of century ago Grandmaster Alexander Nikolaevich Panchenko has become a head of one or its sections. Many well-known grandmasters and masters had grown up in it both in chess and human sense. A.N. Panchenko students, grandmasters A.Galliamova, S.Rublevsky, M.Ulibin, S.Volkov, D. Jakovenko, V.Milov, M.Sorokin, D.Yevseev, E.Kovalevskaya, A.Prudnikova, T.Shumiakina, WIM R.Bilunova and A.Zizevskikh, responded with pleasure to the section head S.Nikolaev’s suggestion to share their memories of the School. Before the readers get acquainted with those memoirs (and with A.N. Panchenko's interwiew) we’d like to publish an article by the school graduate GM Ruslan Sherbakov devoted to the creative credo of Alexander Nikolaevich. Added to the section “Creativity”.

In the Premier League the last but one 8th round has been played. The results are: TPS - Ladya 4:2, Tomsk-400 – Youzhny Ural 4.5:1.5, Yunost Moskvy – Economist-SGSEU 2.5:3.5, Polytekhnik - Ural 2.5:3.5, Elara - Shatar 4:2. The standings are: Tomsk-400 16, Ural 14, Economist-SGSEU and Elara – 11points both, Yunost Moskvy 9, TPS 7, Ladya and Youzhny Ural – 4 points each, Shatar 3, Polytekhnik 1. In order to win the championship in will be enough for Tomsk-400 not to lose in the last match to “Ural” with a score greater than 2.5:3.5. The Superior league championship finished. In the last round FINEK drew their match (3:3), and Chigorin Club won (4.5:1.5). The winner of the league is “Economist-SGSEU-2” (Saratov) – 15 points, St.Petersburg FINEK finished second – 13, Moscow “SPASIO” was third – 12. According to the regulations, all those teams will play in the Premier league next year. After their successful finish Chigorin Club had scored 10 points and became 5th. In the 3rd and last but one final round of the ladies’ championship the results were as follows: Ladya -Akademia 3:1, Economist-SGSEU 1- Youzhny Ural 1.5:2.5, АВС-RGSU 3:1, Petrodom – FINEK-1 0.5:3.5. The standings are: Ladya 10, Youzhny Ural 9, АВС 8, FINEK-1 7, Economist-SGSEU-1 and Akademia - both 6, RGSU 2, Petrodom 0. In the minor tournament for 9th-14th places Chigorin Club drew against Debut-DVGU 2:2, and FINEK -2 lost to Polytekhnik 1.5:2.5.

In the 1st round V.Topalov lost to L.-D. Nisipeanu, G.Kamsky – to Sh.Mamedyarov; M.Adams and K.Sasikiran drew their game. In the 2nd round tomorrow Topalov meets Adams, Sasikiran - Mamedyarov and Nisipeanu - Kamsky.

Having beaten “Nizhegorodets” in the last round (4.5:1.5), St.Petersburg M.I.Chigorin Club team became Russia champion among children’s clubs and school teams. They won all nine matches and scored 18 team points and 39 individual points. The lineup on the team was: A.Shimanov, R.Barhudarian, E.Urjubdshzirov, G.Bazeev, V.Korchagina and M.Butuc. Our congratulations! The runner-up was “Tikhiy Don” from Rostov " - 14 points (36.5), “ Economist-SGSEU” (Saratov) finished third " - 12 points (31.5).

10.05.2007 INSTEAD OF “CROSSROADS”: A.Ya.MODEL “THE YEARS OF THE SIEGE"
Today we celebrate the Victory Day for the 62nd time. In memory of the war years we publish the notes of Abram Yakovlevich Model (1895-1976) on chess in besieged Leningrad. This article had been written for the "64", where it was published (about 1975) with abridgements. Later a part of this material was published in S.Morozov’s article “Ten weeks and a half. The war and death of A.F. Ilyin-Zhenevskiy” ("Ch.P." No.1, 2004). The text written by A.Ya.Model’s hand and the original placard announcing the admittance to the city children sport school of Leningrad Palace of Pioneers in 1944-1945 school year are kept in A.Ya.Model archive at the editor’s of this site (the second copy of the placard is given to the Anichkov Palace Museum).

Before it St.Petersburg FINEK, after having defeated Voronezh “Krais Group” 4:2 in the 8th round, has 12 points and is placed second behind Economist-SGSEU (13 points). A draw against Smolensk “Rosneft” in the final round guarantees our players a promotion to the Premier league. Chigorin Club beat SK MIFI from Moscow 4.5:1.5. The results of the 2nd final round in the ladies’ Russia championship are: RGSU - Economist-SGSEU-10.5:3.5, FINEK-1 - Ladya - 1.5:2.5, Akademia - Petrodom 4:0, Youzhny Ural - ABC –2:2. The standings are: Ladya 8, Youzhny Ural 7, Akademia, Economist-SGSEU-1, ABC - 6 points each, FINEK-1 5, RGSU 2, Petrodom 0. In the group of teams playing for the places from 9th to 14th FINEK-2 drew their match against Debut-DVGU 2:2 and Chigorin Club defeated Izhstal 4:0. Tomorrow is a playing day in all the championships from the children’s to the Premier league

09.05.2007 ISCU World School championships
In Greek city of Halkidiki the third ISGU (the President is A. Kostyev) World school championships were held. The participants were boys and girls of age categories from 9 to 17 years old. The Russian players won 1gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals. St.Petersburg schoolchildren G. Palchun and A.Styazhkina both finished 5th in the U-11 age groups.
