04.05.2007 RUSSIA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Parallel with men’s and ladies’ championships the Russia children club championship is held in Dagomys. 25 teams take part in the competition. In St.Petersburg (M.I.Chigorin Club) and Rostov-upon-Don (“Tikhiy Don”) they took the matter seriously and brought “pro” teams with average ratings above 2220. Both those teams include 3 FIDE masters each. Even the third - numerically speaking - team has an average rating of 2086, and the fifth one does not reach even 2000. Thus it is no surprise that the Elo-favorites have won in the first two rounds. Still the figures do not play chess, but children do. That is why the St.Petersburg team, despite the average ratings’ difference of 300 points, managed to beat “Youzhny Ural” from Cheliabinsk only with the minimal score of 3.5:2.5. V.Sokolova, playing on the girls’ board against the team of her native city, has become one of the two winners in the opponent team. The children will play 9 Swiss System rounds, the last of which will take place on May 10.
