11.09.2006 RUSSIAN HIGHER LEAGUE, TOMSK
Two games on the top boards ended as quick draws - Inarkiev-Tomashevsky and Khismatullin-Vitiugov. Alekseev defeated Malakhov, Najer def. Khalifman, Nepomnyaschij def. Kobalia and Grigoriants def. Timofeev. The last round once again illustrated disadvantages of Buchgolz coefficient as a tie-breaker. A game played on the 17th board between Amonatov and Chuprov turned decisive for distributing precious Superfinal spots. Amonatov, playing White, lost a drawish ending. The following players qualified for the Superfinal: 1.Ernesto Inarkiev (Moscow) 6.5, 2.Denis Khismatullin (Ufa), 3.Yevgeny Tomashevsky (Saratov), 4.Ian Nepomnyaschij (Bryansk), 5.Sergey Grigoriants (Moscow), 6.Evgeny Alekseev and 7.Nikita Vitiugov (both St.Petersburg) - all with 6 points. All the players are young, ranging from 16 to 21 years old. More experienced Evgeny Najer also scored 6 points, but lost the last spot to Vitiugov due to inferior 'progress' - aggregate score. Other St.Petersburg representatives showed the following results: Popov 5.5, Khalifman and Yemelin - both 5, Yevseev 4.5, Ionov and Anisimov - both 4.

The rich will become richer, the poor will become poorer - so might happen in chess if the Grand Slam, announced by Silvio Danailov and organizers of some of the main tournaments, actually starts working. Linares, Wijk aan Zee, Sofia and Bilabo (??) have joined the elite circle. They are negotiating with Morelia, Dortmund and 'a Russian city'.

Ernesto Inarkiev (Moscow) became a sole leader with 6 poitns and a round to go. He defeated another Muscovite, Malakhov. Three players are half a point behind the leader: Nikita Vitiugov (St.Petersburg), Evgeny Tomashevsky (Saratov), who drew their individual encounter, and Denis Khismatullin (Ufa), who defeated Dreev (Moscow). Other players competing for the qualifying spots are Alekseev (def. Belozerov), Khalifman, Lastin (Zheleznovodsk) - they drwe with each other, Grigoriants, Kobalia, Malakhov, Najer (all - Moscow), Landa (Omsk; Dortmund), Nepomnyaschij (Bryansk) and Timofeev (Kazan) - all having 5 points. Other St.Petersburg players have the following score: Popov (drew with Vorobiov) and Yemelin (def. Maletin) have 4.5, Anisimov, Yevseev (a draw with each other) and Ionov (def. The European Junior Championships among boys and girls U10-U18 has started in Herceg Novi, Montenegro. The organizers enjoying a record-breaking number of participants - 742! Russia is represented by more than 70 players, each fifth of them originates from St. Petersburg. The first round is already played.

Timofeev and Khismatullin, who were leading before today's round, lost their games to Malakhov and Tomashevsky, and Inarkiev drew with Dreev. Inarkiev has 5 points now, as well as Malakhov, Tomashevsky and Vitiugov, who defeated Motylev. Seven players have 4.5 points, including ex-world champion Alexander Khalifman. Other St.Petersburg players ended their games as follows: Grigoriants-Khalifman draw, Alekseev-Landa draw, Yudin-Popov draw, Zakhartsov-Yemelin draw, Riazantsev-Anisimov draw, Yevseev-Gubaidullin 1-0, Voitsekhovsky-Ionov draw.

Only Alexander Khalifman qualifies to the Superfinal at this point.

The early leader Denis Khismatullin lost to Ernesto Inarkiev in the 5th round, and was replaced by Inarkiev and Artyom Timofeev, both having 4 points after 5 games. 9 players are half a point behind, including three Petersburgers - Nikita Vitiugov, Alexander Khalifman and Evgeny Alekseev. Vitiugov, who played at the second table, drew with Malakhov, Khalifman drew with Tomashevsky, and Alekseev defeated Chebotarev. Valery Popov has 3 points (a draw with Khairullin), Vassily Yemelin has 2 points (a draw with Amonatov). Other three representatives of St. Peterburg were less successful: Yevseev, Ionov and Anisimov lost to Yudin, Riazantsev and Galkin respectively.

07.09.2006 ALEXANDER GRISCHUK BECOMES THE WORLD CHAMPION IN BLITZ!
It has been reported that Alexander Grischuk became the world champion in blitz. Grischuk and Peter Svidler tied after 15 rounds of the all-play-all tournament, and Grischuk won the armageddon game. The championship was held in Israel under the aegis of FIDE.

In the 4th round Khalifman defeated Shaposhnikov, and Vitiugov defeated Volkov. Popov drew against Dreev, Alekseev draw vs. Lysyj, and Yemelin drew with Galkin. Alas, three Petersburgers lost: Yevseev to Malakhov, Ionov to Bocharov and Anisimov to Kobalia. Vitiugov and Khalifman have 3 out of 4, sharing 2nd-8th half a point behind Khismatullin. 05.09.2006 WORLD BLITZ CHAMPIONSHIP
The world blitz championship starts today in Rishon LeZion. Amateurs play today, and tomorrow a qualification tournament will determine last 6 participants of the key tournament of the event. 16 players meet in all-play-all format to determine the world champion. The list includes Anand, Svidler, Gelfand, Radjabov, Polgar, Grischuk, Bacrot, Carlsen, Gagunashvili and D.Gurevich. The championship ends on Thursday.

05.09.2006 Israelis lose to a machine
Yesterday the national team of Israel played a match against Israeli computer program Junior 10, which is the world champion among chess programs. The machine won 3-1. Grandmasters Avrukh and Mikhalevsky managed to make draws, while Roiz and Erenburg lost their games.

The first round in played in Tomsk at the Higher League of the 59th Russian individual championship. There were two notable upsets: Chernyshov defeated Motylev, and Nepomnyaschij defeated another former Russian champion Volkov. Talking about St. Petersburg players, only Popov managed winning his first round game (against Nechiporenko), others made draws, including Ionov-Khalifman. Unfortunately, Konstantin Sakaev had to withdraw due to illness. The second round is tomorrow. The relay starts at 12-00 msk.
