The European Junior championships in rapid chess ended in Montenegro. Two players from St. Petersburg won silver medals: Shimanov (B-14) and Lanin (B-18). Linchevsky (B-16) from Leningrad region also took the second place in his group. The following players became champions: Milutinovic (Serbia) and Lugovskoj (Russia) (G-10, B-10), Lezhepekova and Savitsky (both Russia) (U-12), Voinovic (Serbia) and Ter-Sakhakian (Armenia) (U-14), Sadykhova (Russia) and Normantas (Lithuania) (U-16), Airapetian (Russia) and S.Zhigalko (Belarus) (U-18). Valentina Gunina (Russia) and Sergey Zhigalko (Belarus) won the European Cup in rapid chess; the latter defeated Lanin (Russia) in the final

21.09.2006 WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
We congratulate all chess fans with the start of the unifying match between Veselin Topalov and Vladimir Kramnik. The match is going to be very exciting, and the fact that it will finally resolve chaos in the chess wolrd is also very pleasing. Our website will publish online commentary by grandmasters Sakaev and Yemelin. We are also planning to receive other interesting materials about the match. Please note that the games start at 15-00 msk, the first game being played on Saturday. The time control is classical: 2 hours for 40 moves, 1 hour for next 20 moves, and 15 minutes plus 30 seconds per move for the rest of the game. The colors in the first game will be determined today at the opening ceremony.

Petersburgers Christina Kolesnikova (G-10) and Victoria Korchagina (G-14) became medal winners at the European championships in Montenegro, having scored 7 points in 9 games. Christina took the bronze, and Victoria was awarded with silver medal. Grigory Palchun (B-10, 7 points), and Anish Giri (B-12, 7 points) finished 4th. Maria Rumyantseva (G-16, 6.5, 5th), Anna Styazhkina (G-10, 6.5, 6th), Dina Bazhenova (G-12, 6, 10th), and Alexander Shimanov (B-14, 6, 10th) finished among the top 10 in their age groups. Other representatives of St. Petersburg showed the following scores: Fedoseev (B-12) - 5.5 and 20th, Lanin, Lovkov (both B-18) and Kuzevanova (G-18) - 5 points, 22nd, 23rd, and 22nd, Bazeev (B-14) - 4.5, 40th, Pankov (B-18) - 4, 43rd, and Sorin (B-10) - 4 points and 57th place.
