11.11.2006 Tal’s tale in Gorodnitsky’s book
In his book “The hope will be living still” (2001, Vagrius publishing house) the talented bard and scientist Alexander Gorodnitsky referred to a well-known story by Mikhail Tal which had been published many times before in different variations – the patient that the tale concerns was a 17 year old youth or a bigwig but in all cases the story was dated back to 1960. The link was sent by our colleague Nikolay Fuzik of Kiev.

10.11.2006 Zhanna Tal. “We can’t count on my father’s services”
The International Arbiter Alfred Deuel sent us the link to an interview in Russian with Tal’s daughter Zhanna published by the Riga newspaper Telegraph. Zhanna confessed that it was actually her first interview. “As far as I can see nowadays our family is low-rated”, she says. During last 12 years Zhanna and her mother Angelina (friends call her Gelia) reside in Germany but Zhanna plans to get back to Riga. It is known that Tal was a good piano player and her daughter is also a skilful musician although she hasn’t completed professional education. In Germany she gives music lessons but she also studied information science and communication management in the university. Moreover Zhanna had an experience of working as a financial advisor and even tried to get a job in the police (“It was a mad idea”, she smiled). But recently her main interest is in theatre, choreography and vocal. Zhanna never studied chess seriously as Tal was sure one chessplayer in a family is more than enough. However she reached second category level once. Observing the match Kramnik – Topalov Zhanna felt that chess is degenerating turning into a competition of a better memory or an ability to buy a more powerful computer which would help to calculate everything. “Where has creativity gone?” she asks supposing that Tal “would be shocked by today’s chess”. Sad to say unlike her stepbrother George, Zhanna who resembles her father in look very much wasn’t invited to attend Tal Memorial in Moscow.

08.11.2006 Pettay sends his regards to Gijssen
It transpires that not only our football referees’ competence raises doubts which in particular became apparent in the match CSKA – Zenith. Obviously the Moscow climate has a bad influence on all the arbiters. How else can one explain a banal mistake by the FIDE Chief Arbiter Geurt Gijssen who declared threefold repetition in the game of the second round Morozevich – Carlsen though in fact it wasn’t the case as the position in question arose with another side to move? To his credit be it said the Dutchman unlike the Russian referee admitted his error himself. Afterwards he wanted to continue the game but couldn’t find the frustrated Morozevich who had already left the playing hall.
