16.03.2006 Rejkjavik open
A traditional open finished yesterday in the capital of Iceland. There were 103 participants, and five grandmasters tied for the first. According to the tiebreak they were arranged in the following order: 1.Gabriel Sargissian (Armenian), 2.Ahmed Adly (Egypt), 3.S.Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan), 4.Igor-Alexander Nataf (France) and Pentala Harikrishna (India). Russian Pavel Tregubov took the 16th place with 5,5/9.

16.03.2006 WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
There are five Russian representatives in the 3rd Round of the Women's World Championship! This is a 100% success, bearing in mind that there were 6 Russians in the 2nd Round, and two of them had to play each other. Kosteniuk won against Danielian, Matveeva passed Zapata, Kosintseva defeated Krush, Galliamova won against Lujan and Kovalevskaya knocked out Kursova. The favorites keep dropping out: defending champion Stefanova as well as top rated Koneru and former European champions Cramling and Zhukova were defeated already in the 2nd Round!

14.03.2006 WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Russians did quite well in the first games of the second round. Alexandra Kosteniuk won against Danielian as Black, Svetlana Matveeva defeated Peruvian Zapata, Tatiana Kosintseva won against Krush. In the Russian match Ekaterina Kovalevskaya defeated Maria Kursova. Only Alisa Galliamova lost to Lujan from Argentina. 16 winners of the 2nd round will be determined today after the second game at a normal pace and, if necessary, rapid and blitz tiebreaks.

14.03.2006 UKRAINIAN CHESS EXPANSION IN THE UNITED STATES
Alexander Onischuk became the USA champion-2006, defeating Yury Shulman in the final 1.5-0.5. Anna Zatonskih won the women's title, beating Rusudan Goletiani with the game score. Both champions had played for Ukraine recently.

Russian chessplayers played with varying success in the first round of the women’s world championship which takes place in Ekaterinburg – only six Russian players out of twelve will continue playing. The following players advanced to the second round: A.Kosteniuk (She defeated N.Khoudgarian (Canada)), T.Kosintseva (2:0 against S.Meenaksi (India)), S.Matveeva (had the same score against her compatriot I.Vasilevich, A.Galliamova (1,5:0,5 against M.Purtseladze (Georgia)), E.Kovalevskaya (1,5:0,5 against S.Pina (Cuba)) and M.Kursova ( 1,5:0,5 against Zhao Xue (China)). N.Kosintseva (lost 0,5:1,5 to HouYifan (China)), I.Turova previously known as Slavina (lost with the same score to L.Javakhishvili (Georgia)), E.Zaiatz (0,5:1,5 against M.Sebag (France)) will leave Ekaterinburg together with Vasilevich. After drawing the main match representatives of Russia E.Korbut, who lost the tie-break to Ushenina (Ukraine) (1:3) and E.Ovod, who lost blitz to N.Dzagnidze (Georgia) (2:4) will join other ladies leaving Ekaterinburg. Our players got the following pairings in the second round: A.Kosteniuk vs E.Danielian (Armenia), T.Kosintseva vs I.Krush (the USA), E.Kovalevskaya vs M.Kursova, A.Galliamova vs K.Lujan (Argentina) and S.Matveeva vs K.Zapata (Peru). The US chess championship is underway in San Diego, California. The formula of it is quite exotic - 64 players including 14 women are divided into two equally strong groups (according to the rating) and play a 9-round Swiss. The group winners determine the champion in the match of two rapid games (and, if necessary, blitz tiebreak), and two best female players play for the women's title. After two third of the Swiss distance the best result in the first group is shown by Alexander Onischuk - 5 points, Dmitry Gurevich and Dmitry Shneider both have 4,5/6. Rusudan Goletiani has the best score among women - 3/6. In the second group Yury Shulman is in the lead with 5/6, Igor Novikov has 4,5, Gata Kamsky and Larry Christiansen both have 4. Batchimeg Tuvshintugs leads among women with 3,5 points. Irina Krush could not participate in the championship because it coincided with FIDE Women championship, which starts tomorrow in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

A new Human vs. Computer match is announced, the ChessBase website informs. Classical world champion Vladimir Kramnik will play a six-game match with Deep Fritz in a former capital of Germany, Bonn. The match takes place from November, 25th to December, 5th. A finance minister of Germany Peer Steinbruck is Patron of the event. Vladimir Kramnik will get half a million dollars as starting fee. This amount will be doubled in case Kramnik wins the match.
