23.03.2006 Moscow championships
Annual championships of the Russian capital run in different formulas. 32 men (15 grandmasters) compete in a knock out event. Right now the 2nd Round is played. In the first games of the 2nd Round Jakovenko def. Nikolenko, Rustemov def. Poktin (Aronian's second), and Amonatov def. Dolmatov. The women's championship is a round-robin event with 12 participants (6 grandmasters). WGM Irina Vasilevich leads the field with 2.5/3.

Our legendary fellow Petersburger Victor L'vovich Korchnoi turns 75 today! One cannot but admire his creative longevity: Korchnoi keeps playing in the most challenging tournaments showing results that make young grandmaster jealous. Those who competed with Korchnoi for the chess crown gradually move towards retirement, and Victor is still onstage, giving master classes to next generations of chess players. Korchnoi is tireless - he plays in various regions of the world, writes brilliant chess books one after another, gives sincere interviews, takes part in video clips, acting like a top-level actor... There was one decisive game in the 5th round. As usual, four non-Bologan games ended in draws - Bareev-Sokolov, Rublevsky-Najer, Shirov-Zvjaginsev and Dreev-Onischuk. Viorel Bologan, however, finally ended his losing streak by beating former FIDE champion Ruslan Ponomariov. After 5 rounds Zvjaginsev, Najer, Rublevsky and Shirov have 3 points, Bareev, Dreev, Ponomariov and Sokolov - 2.5, Onischuk - 2, Bologan - 1. Today is a day off.

Three players managed to win their matches in the fourth round of the annual tournament in Monaco: Anand def. Gelfand, Nielsen def. Aronian, Leko def. Ivanchuk (1.5-0.5 in all matches). The players exchanged victories in Vallejo-Morozevich, Svidler-Grischuk and van Wely-Topalov. Morozevich and Topalov are in the lead of the blindfold section with 3/4, Leko has 2.5. Anand and Nielsen are on top of the rapid section with 3/4, Aronian and Gelfand have 2.5. Anand and Morozevich have the best combined score of 5/8, Aronian, Leko and Topalov are trailing by half a point. It is a day off today.

Alisa Galliamova, who defeated Victoria Cmilyte in the semifinal 1.5-0.5 is to meet Chinese Xu Yuhua in the final match. The Chinese WGM won her semifinal against Svetlana Matveeva, 1.5-0.5. St. Petersburg grandmasters Sergey Ivanov and Valery Popov became champions of Sweden with their team Sollentuna. This is the fifth such victory for Sergey and the third one for Valery. Former St. Petersburg grandmaster Evgeny Agrest, who lives now in Stockholm, regularly plays for this team.

The third round results: with similar 1.5-0.5 score (winning a rapid game) Aronian def. Leko, Anand def. Vallejo, Gelfand def. Svidler, and Morozevich def. Grischuk. Ivanchuk won against van Wely with the same score but owing to a blindfolded game. Topalov and Nielsen exchanged blows, with the Bulgarian winning blindfolded and the Dane taking over in a rapid game. Aronian and Morozevich are in the lead with 4 points, Anand, Gelfand and Topalov all have 3.5/6.

The first games of the semifinals ended in draws, and those were lucky draws for the Russian players. In Cmilyte-Galliamova White conducted the middlegame very well and could win in one move, however, Victoria moved her king on a wrong square, and the game ended with perpetual check. In Matveeva-Xu Yuhua Black comfortably equalized and, after a few inaccuracies of Matveeva, the Chinese grandmaster could obtain a winning endgame, however, she also played imprecise and let the advantage to slip away. There are five leaders now: Aronian, Vallejo, Leko, Morozevich and Topalov, all having 2,5 out of 4. Anand, van Wely, Gelfand and Grischuk have 2 points, Nielsen has 1,5 point, Ivanchuk and Svidler have a point. The third round takes place today.

The semifinals are played today in Ekaterginburg. Victoria Cmilyte (Lithuania) meets Alisa Galliamova (Russia), and Svetlana Matveeva (Russia) plays vs. Xu Yuhua (China). One of these four will become a new world champion. In the quarterfinals Galliamova defeated Khurtsidze (2-0), Matveeva defeated Sebag (1,5-0,5), Cmylite won against famous Chiburdanidze (3-1), and Xu Yuhua saw off the challenge of Russian Kovalevskaya (2,5-1,5).

There were two decisive games on the first day of the Quarterfinals. Alisa Galliamova, playing White, defeated Nino Khurtsidze, and Maia Chiburdanidze celebrated another White win against Victoria Cmilyte. Matveeva-Sebag and Kovalevskaya-Xu Yuhua ended in draws. The semifinalists will be decided tomorrow.

The 7th International Tournament named after Anatoly Karpov starts today in Poikovsky, Russia. 10 grandmasters are participating: Ponomariov, Shirov, Bareev, Dreev, Sokolov, Rublevsky, Zvjaginsev, Bologan, Najer and Onischuk. First five rounds take place on March 18th-22nd, last four rounds are to be played after a day off (March 24th-27th). The games start at 15.00 msk, except for the last round, which starts at 13.00. The 15th Amber tournament starts today in the Monte Carlo hotel in Monaco. In the first round meet van Wely-Aronian, Leko-Nielsen, Ivanchuk-Topalov, Vallejo-Svidler, Anand-Morozevich and Gelfand-Grischuk. Anand triumphed a year ago, Kramnik and Morozevich were the winners in 2004. The tournament schedule: March 18th-21th (rounds 1-4), 23rd-26th (rounds 5-8), 28th-30th (rounds 9-11). The games start at 17.00 Moscow time.

Only eight players "survived" in the World Championship in Ekaterinburg, others can only dream about being more successful in the next championship. Russia lost two main hopes - Alexandra Kosteniuk and Tatiana Kosintseva were eliminated in the 3rd Round. However, three experienced players went on - Alisa Galliamova, Ekaterina Kovalevskaya and Svetlana Matveeva. They avoided being paired with each other, and tomorrow shall start fighting for the semifinal spots. Galliamova plays against Khurtsidze, Kovalevskaya meets Xu Yuhua, Matveeva plays against Sebag. The last pair is Chiburdanidze-Cmilyte. We wish success to our compatriouts!

The games Galliamova (Russia) - Radzievich (Poland), Sebag (France) - Qin Kanying (China), Kosteniuk (Russia) - Cmilyte (Lithuania), Ju Wenjun (China) - Chiburdanidze (Georgia), Xu Yuhua (China) - T.Kosintseva (Russia) and Vijayalakshmi (India) - Matveeva (Russia) were drawn. Eight quarterfinalists will be determined today.
