18.12.2006 ALEXANDER KENTLER. CROSSROADS: DOPE IN CHESS
On Friday, December 8 the Gosduma has ratified the International Convention against Doping in Sport which had been passed at the UNESCO General Conference in Paris, on 19th October 2005. A total sum of 60 million roubles is invested in the 2007 federal budget of Russia for the doping control. Yearly 10,000 sportsmen will be tested. It is unknown whether chessplayers will be among them but the forbidden medications that stimulate the muscle bulk growing surely have no concern to our game. Meanwhile there are medications that influence the brain activity.

The final round hasn’t determined the winner of the title. Both leaders drew their games: Alekseev against Nepomniachtchi and Jakovenko against Grigoriants. The games Svidler – Vitiugov, Tomashevsky – Khairullin and Khismatullin – Rublevsky were drawn as well. Inarkiev beat Najer. Final standings: 1-2. Alekseev, Jakovenko – 7.5, 3. Inarkiev – 7, 4. Svidler – 6.5, 5-7. Rublevsky, Tomashevsky, Khairullin – 5.5, 8-10. Grigoriants, Nepomniachtchi, Khismatullin – 5, 11. Vitiugov – 3.5, 12. Najer – 2.5. Defeating Jakovenko in the tie-break rapid match with the score 1.5-0.5 the grandmaster Evgeny Alekseev of Saint Petersburg became the 2006 Russian Champion. Our congratulations! In 15 championships held in the post-Soviet times he is the fourth representative of our city who won the title. Prior to him the Russian champions were Peter Svidler (1994, 1995, 1997, 2003), Alexander Khalifman (1996) and Konstantin Sakaev (1999).

The International Master, the 1947 Champion of RSFSR Nikolay Aleksandrovich Novotelnov is celebrating his 95th birthday. He played in the USSR Championship in 1951 and in five Leningrad Championships. He was the leader after 6 rounds in the 1941 Championship which wasn’t terminated because of the Leningrad blockade. Among her achievements are the golden medal of the 2004 Girls’ World Championship, two victories in the Russian Championships U-20, the victory in the Saint Petersburg women’s championship, the “silver” of the European Club Cup and the “gold” in the 2004 Russian team championship where she was playing for FINEC.
