The main events of the tremendous chess festival in Pardubice, Czech Republic, have started yesterday. GMs Vasilios Kotronias (GRE, 2602) and Boris Grachev (RUS, 2601) are at the head of the field in the Open A (429 players). St. Petersburg fraction in A and B tournaments is about 30 players, mostly young. IMs A.Shimanov (2428), A.Ivanov (2421), A.Smirnov (2410), Ju.Bibik (2328), S.Bystrov (2317) and WIM Iu.Gromova (2201) won their games in round 1 (Open A).

Grandmaster Julio Granda Zuñiga of Peru became the champion of the American continent with 8/11, having edged on tie-break GMs V.Akobian USA, A.Ivanov USA, D.Lima BRA and IM E.Iturrizaga VEN. The five will play in the World Cup in Khanty Mansiysk. 8 players who scored 7.5 points have determined in play-off games two more participants of the World Cup: IM E.Matsuura BRA and GM F.Peralta ARG.

Chess has got big chances to be included into the program of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympiad, said FIDE President at a press-conference today. Also, he announced a show "Stars over the chess board" to appear on one of the national TV channels, with $1,000,000 prize for winners. (In Russian).

Boris Gryzlov, Speaker of the State Duma, and other official persons said that compulsory chess lessons may be introduced in Russian schools to improve progress of schoolchildren. 20.07.2007 A Curious Coincidence of Dates
A Curious Coincidence of Dates On 20th of July 1924, just the same day when FIDE was established in Paris, a "live chess" game was played on Palace Square (Uritsky Square in 1924) in St. Petersburg. Maestro Petr Romanovsky played White (military sailors), and maestro Ilya Rabinovich played Black (Red Army soldiers). The weather was fine, and the show gathered about 8 thousand spectators. The duel lasted more than 5 hours and ended in a draw on move 67.
