10.03.2007 70th Women’s Saint Petersburg Championship
The 70th Women’s City Championship has finished in the M.I.Chigorin Club. 6 points out of 9 were scored by three Olgas – Lelekova, Ivkina and Stjazhkina and Marina Lupik. Tie-breaks defined that O.Lelekova is the champion, O.Ivkina takes second place and M.Lupik is the third. The new champion will be 20 years old in September. She is Petersburg born and bred but spent her years of childhood in Chita where her parents worked. Olga is a third-year student in the North West Academy of Public Service. Her trainer is GM V.Popov. Recently at the Moscow Open tournament she made her first IM norm. O.Lelekova enter her name on the annals of the Women’s City Champions under No. 37. Our congratulations!

09.03.2007 RYBKA SWALLOWED EHLVEST
In New Jersey, USA an 8 game match has been finished between the world’s strongest computer program Rybka and the Estonian GM Jan Ehlvest who resides in USA. In all encounters (time control 45 minutes per game plus 10 seconds increment per move) the computer was White but it gave the man a pawn handicap: in the first game the h-pawn was taken off the board, then g, f, e and so on. Nevertheless odds didn’t help. Rybka attacked the enemy king with inspiration and won the match confidently 5.5-2.5 (+4=3-1).
