12.01.2007 THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF HOOGOVENS (CORUS) TOURNAMENTS (BEVERWIJK, WIJ
Today the open ceremony and drawing of lots will be held at the outstanding competition in Wijk aan Zee, which has a glorious history. The first tournament organized by the Dutch concern Hoogovens started on the eve of 1938 in the town of Beverwijk. Until the end of the war only the Dutch citizens took part in the event. Since 1946 the tournament has become international. In 1968 it moved to Wijk aan Zee in a neighbourly way. In different years its winners were the World Champions M.Euwe, M.Botvinnik, M.Tal, T.Petrosian, B.Spassky, A.Karpov, G.Kasparov, V.Kramnik. The FIDE World Champion V.Anand won the tournament more often than anyone else – five times. M.Euwe, L.Portisch and V.Korchnoi scored four victories each, H.Donner, E.Geller, J.Nunn and G.Kasparov took the first place three times (the latter has a unique achievement: three clear wins in a row in 1999-2001). T.van Scheltinga, F.Olafsson, B.Larsen, L.Polugaevsky, W.Browne, G.Sosonko, J.Timman, N.Short, A.Karpov, P.Nikolic and V.Salov were victorious two times each. Among the winners we’d like to mark out S.Tartakower, P.Keres, M.Taimanov and the FIDE World Champion V.Topalov. In 1999 Hoogovens concern merged with the British company Corus Group therefore since 2000 the event has adopted a name of Corus tournament. Since that time the winners were: 2000 and 2001 – Garry Kasparov, 2002 – Evgeny Bareev, 2003 and 2004 – Vishy Anand, 2005 – Peter Leko, 2006 – Vishy Anand and Veselin Topalov. Thus the 2007 edition will be the 67th.

11.01.2007 Moscow (+6) – London (+12) = a draw!
Today the ice chess match was held played on 64-meter boards that were placed in Pushkin Square in Moscow and Trafalgar Square in London. The players were kept warm: the temperature in Moscow was +6 and in London +12! It’s fine that during the playing hour the pieces didn’t begin to flow as unanimous streams. The Moscow team was comprised of the 12th World Champion Anatoly Karpov, the Olympic Rhythmic Gymnastics Champion Alina Kabaeva, the writer Victor Yerofeev and the actor Vassily Livanov. They were supporting a person at the board, the 7-year-old Konstantin Savenkov who was constantly called “genius” for some reason. His opponent in London was the 8-year-old Darius Parvizi-Wayne. The World Championship challenger Nigel Short and the writer Peter Ackroyd kept him company. To a draw offer sent from Moscow London responded with an enthusiastic “Yes of course!” Our correspondent Vladimir Barskij sent the photos from the historical match.
