Pentala Harikrishna won the 4th Marx György Memorial in Paks with 6.5/10, a full point clear of Zahar Efimenko. Wang Yue and Almasi have 5 points, Berkes has 4.5, Acs is on the last place with 3.5. The tournament is sponsored by a local nuclear plant.

Bulgarian Kiril Georgiev won a rapid tournament in Liepaja, Latvia. He scored 9 points, half a point clear of Zurab Azmaiparashvili. Estonian Kaido Kulaots has 8 points, Max Dlugy has 7.5, and Alexander Khalifman took the 5th place with 7 points.

Once again the Dortmund supertournament ends in favor of Vladimir KRAMNIK. In the last round Vladimir defeated Peter Leko, shared the first place with Peter Svidler (who drew with Micky Adams) and was awarded the main prize due to a superior tie-break. Both Russians got 4.5 points. Boris Gelfand's win over Levon Aronian allowed him joining the 3rd place tie: Adams, Leko, Gelfand, all with 4 points. Arkady Naiditsch defeated unfortunate Baadur Jobava, and got the 6th place, 3.5 points. Aronian (2) and Jobava (1.5) concluded the list.

On Friday and Saturday the grandmasters pleased the spectator with four decisive games. In the Round 5 Leko defeated Aronian, and Gelfand defeated Jobava. Kramnik-Adams and Naiditsch-Svidler were drawn. In the Round 6 the same players lost as White to the Russians: Svidler beaten Aronian, and Kramnik won against Jobava. Leko-Gelfand and Adams-Naiditsch ended peacefully. Before the last round of the quickest supertournament in the calendar, Leko and Svidler have the lead with 4 points, followed by Adams and Kramnik - both 3.5, Gelfand 3, Naiditsch 2.5, Aronian 2 and Jobava 1.5. On Sunday Leko is due to play Black against Kramnik, while Svidler has White against Adams.

Morozevich finished the tournament with a quick draw with Radjabov, which enabled Carlsen to catch up with Teimour, beating Bruzon. Pelletier defeated Volokitin. The final standings: Morozevich 7.5, Carlsen and Radjabov 6, Volokitin and Pelletier 4, Bruzon 2.5. The women's tournament brought the following results: Cramling 7, Socko 5.5, Dembo 5, Muzychuk 4.5, Skripchenko and Atalik 4.

Alexander Morozevich secured the first place in a grandmaster tournament in Biel with a round to spare. After 9 rounds the Muscovite has 7 points. Radjabov has 5.5, Carlsen 5, Volokitin 4, Pelletier 3, and Bruzon 2.5. The final round is played today. Pia Cramling also secured her win in the women's event.

Michael Adams defeated Gelfand and caught up with other two leader, Peter Leko and Peter Svidler. The trio has 2.5 points. Other games of the day were drawn: Aronian-Naiditsch, Svidler-Kramnik, and Jobava-Leko. Aronian and Kramnik share the 4th-5th places with four draws each, and Gelfand, Jobava and Naiditsch conclude the standinds with 1.5. Today is a second free day. 13 games out of 16 ended in draws so far.

Traditional Politiken Cup open, the largest one in the Northern Europe, finished in Copenhagen, Denmark. Vadim Malakhatko (Ukraine), Nigel Short (England) and Jonny Hector (Sweden) shared the first place with 7.5 points. Rafael Vaganian scored 6.5, sharing 10th-21st places. There were no Russian representatives among 259 participants.

01.08.2006 NORTH URAL CUP 2006
The 8th round virtually decided the fate of the first prize. Ukrainian Kateryna Lahno with Black pieces defeated Matveeva, while another contender, Zhu Chen, lost as White to Nadezhda Kosintseva. Thus Lahno moved to a clear first with 6.5, Zhu Chen having 5.5. Other 8th round games also ended decisively: Mkrtchian-Tatiana Kosintseva 1-0, Cmilyte-Chiburdanidze 0-1, Stefanova-Hou Yifan 1-0. In the final round Lahno drew with Stefanova, and Zhu Chen drew with Chiburdanidze. Thus Kateryna Lahno won the North Ural Cup 2006 - our congratulations!
