A presentation of the first registered Ukrainian professional chess club took place in Kiev yesterday. Goals of the club are to win Ukrainian team championships and to show good results in European Club Cups. Members of the team are Ruslan Ponomariov and five more players of the world top 100, GM Vladimir Baklan being the captain.

Vladislav Tkachiev of France beat Emil Sutovsky (ISR) in the final tie-break match and became the champion of Europe. Dmitry Jakovenko (RUS) won bronze medal beating Dusko Pavasovic (SLO). K.Sakaev lost the match for 5th place to I.Cheparinov in blitz games. N.Vitiugov qualified to the World Championship. A.Khalifman did not played vs R.Markus and lost by default. Women medallists are: 1. Tatiana Kosintseva (RUS), 2. Antoaneta Stefanova (BUL), 3. Nadezhda Kosintseva (RUS). E.Korbut is a qualifier to the Women World Championship.

K.Sakaev and I.Cheparinov will struggle for the 5th place, A.Iljin remained 7th. 2nd and 3rd places in women championship will be decided between N.Kosintseva and A.Stefanova, Hoang Thanh Trang remained 4th. A.Khalifman will play vs R.Markus (SRB) and N.Vitiugov vs G.Meier (GER) for qualifying to the World Championship.

Seven chess-players scored 8/11 after the last round of 8th European Championship: D.Jakovenko, K.Sakaev and A.Iljin of Russia, I.Cheparinov (BUL), E.Sutovsky (ISR), V.Tkachiev (FRA) and D.Pavasovic (SLO). The title and medals owners will be decided on tie-breaks today. The next group of 37 players with 7.5 points, including N.Vitiugov and A.Khalifman, is to determine other qualifiers to the World Championship (33 places for men altogether). V.Epishin scored 6.5, V.Popov 5.5. The Woman European Champion Tatiana Kosintseva (RUS) finished with 10/11! N.Kosintseva, A.Stefanova (BUL) and Hoang Thanh Trang (HUN) shared 2-4 places with 8 points and will fight for silver and bronze medals. E.Korbut scored 7.5 in a group of 15 in which the rest 9 of 13 qualifiers to the Women World Championship are to be determined. E.Ovod scored 6.5, I.Sudakova 6, Iu.Gromova 5.

The third rapid game between Boris Spassky and Lajos Portisch was drawn at move 32. In the fourth game Spassky, playing Black, blundered and resigned after Portisch had taken his piece. The score in the 'Match of Legends' became 2-2. The last two games will be played today.

St. Petersburg players won one gold and four silver medals at Youth Championships of Russia in Dagomys. Aleksey Goganov became the champion in B16 group, and he will play for Russia at World Youth Championship. Silver medallists to play at Youth European Championships are: B10 Kirill Alekseenko, B12 Vladimir Fedoseev, G14 Maria Butuc and G16 Anna Shlakich. Good results have shown B14 Anish Giri (4th place), G10 Anna Styazhkina (5), G14 Daria Efremova (5), G16 Anastasia Bragina (4) and Anastasia Sorokina (6), B10 Evgeny Zanan (8), G10 Irina Pukhovskaya (8), B18 German Pankov (8-10). A presentation of a rapid-chess tournament took place in Madrid. It will be held in Leon, Spain, on July 4-9, former FIDE World Champions V.Anand, V.Topalov, R.Ponomariov and R.Kasimdzhanov participating. Two semifinals and a final match will be played, 20 m + 10 s/move. 10th World Champion Boris Spassky and FRL number one Vishy Anand were present at the ceremony.
