THE FIFTH GAME HASN'T BEEN PLAYED TODAY
The fifth game started at 15:22 but the fact is that Vladimir Kramnik refused playing because his demands were not satisfied. The Russian chessplayer appeared at Makropoulos press conference and made a statement saying that he is ready to play the fifth game tomorrow in accordance with the rules accepted before the match.

Kerstin Hansel announces that Topalov team’s protest is absolutely groundless. Kramnik’s manager considers that it is necessary to replace the members of the Appeals Committee because they curtail Kramnik’s rights. The fourth game of the world championship match between Veselin Topalov and Vladimir Kramnik ended in a draw on the 54th move. Now the score is 3:1 in favor of the Russian. Tomorrow is a rest day. The fifth game will be played on Friday, September 29.

Geller Memorial
The Geller Memorial ended in Odessa, Ukraine. Five players shared the fist place in the A-tournament with 6.5 out of 9: grandmasters Brodsky, Zubarev (both Kharkov), Vysochin (Kiev) and Golubev (Odessa), and international master Zubov (Nikolaev). 68 players participated in the main tournament, including 11 grandmasters. In the mass B-tournament there were 106 players. It was won by V.Kholkin, rated 2000.

European Junior Championship
The European Junior championships in rapid chess ended in Montenegro. Two players from St. Petersburg won silver medals: Shimanov (B-14) and Lanin (B-18). Linchevsky (B-16) from Leningrad region also took the second place in his group. The following players became champions: Milutinovic (Serbia) and Lugovskoj (Russia) (G-10, B-10), Lezhepekova and Savitsky (both Russia) (U-12), Voinovic (Serbia) and Ter-Sakhakian (Armenia) (U-14), Sadykhova (Russia) and Normantas (Lithuania) (U-16), Airapetian (Russia) and S.Zhigalko (Belarus) (U-18). Valentina Gunina (Russia) and Sergey Zhigalko (Belarus) won the European Cup in rapid chess; the latter defeated Lanin (Russia) in the final.
