Rowson becomes British champion
Scotsman Jonathan Rowson became a British champion with 8.5 points out of 11. The championship took place at the Wales University in Swansea. Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant collected 8 points and took the second place, surpassing a number of grandmasters. We congratulate Ketevan with the vice-champion title!

CHINA BEATS RUSSIA
A break on the penultimate day of the match secured the team China a win over the Russians, who failed to recover from a crushing defeat 3-7: -1 (men) and -3 (women). On the last day all men's games were drawn, and the Russian women once again lost 2-3. The final score of the China-Russia match is 51.5-49.5: men 23.5-26.5, women 28-22. The best individual scores of the Russians: Dmitry Jakovenko 6.5/10, Nadezhda Kosintseva 6/10.

MAINZ FESTIVAL: FAVORITES BOUNCE BACK
Peter Svidler started his chess-960 championship match against Levon Aronian with two losses, but fought back to 2-2 on the second day. The match between Vishy Anand and Teimour Radjabov develops in a similar way: Radjabov took the lead on Thursday, 1.5-0.5, but Anand came back on Friday to tie the score, 2-2, and there is everything to play for. Etienne Bacrot took the first place with 9.5/11 in the chess-960 open tournament, surpassing Mamedyarov and Grischuk by half a point. Alexandra Kosteniuk became the women's chess-960 champion.

95th ANNIVERSARY OF MIKHAIL BOTVINNIK
Mikhail Botvinnik was born in Kuokkala, near Vyborg, on August 17, 1911. He became the 6th world chess champion in 1948. Botvinnik held the world title longer than any of the players who followed him, except Kasparov.

ELJANOV WINS IN MONTREAL
The Montreal tournament has come to an end. Ukrainian grandmaster Pavel ELJANOV took the first place with 6.5 points - congratulations! Next 5 players were accurately separated by half points: Kamil Miton (Poland), Artyom Timofeev (Russia), Emil Sutovsky (Israel), Boris Gulko and Alexander Onischuk (both USA). 7th-9th places were shared by Charbonneau (Canada), Mikhalevsky (Israel) and Korneev (Russia) - all 3.5, and Ildar Ibragimov (USA) finished last with 3 points. Alexander Huzman won the B event, 6.5.

China-Russia match
Yesterday the 6th round games were played. Russian men lost 2-3, like in the 1st round. Malakhov and Najer lost, but Jakovenko won. Russian women once again defeated their Chinese opponents - N.Kosintseva and Kovalevskaya recorded wins, but T.Kosintseva lost her game. The score is now 31.5-28.5.

SVIDLER-ARONIAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH IN MAINZ
The 8-game match between the chess-960 world chamipon Peter Svidler and the contender Levon Aronian starts tomorrow in Mainz. These players met in 2004, and Svidler won 4.5-3.5. Last year Peter defeated Zoltan Almasi and became a three-time world champion.

ARE SENIORS TOUGH FOR KORCHNOI?
75-year-old Victor Korchnoi, who continues to impress us with his excellent results in various competitions, for the first time took part in the European Senior Championship, which was held in Davos, Switzerland. Strangely, Victor L'vovich only took the 5th place, having lost two games - one to another former Leningrader Mark Tseitlin (representing Israel) in the final round, and one to Vlastimil Jansa. Borislav IVKOV from Serbia won the championship with 8 out of 9, Tseitlin finished second, Jansa (Czech Republic) was third. Oleg Chernikov showed the best result among Russians (6.5 points and the 7th place). Valeria Dotan from Israel won the women's championship (the women played in the same Swiss) - many remember her as Donchenko, Shestoperova from Russia was second, and Fomina from Estonia took the bronze.

In the 4th round the men's teams drew 2.5-2.5, and the Chinese women's team won 3-2. Zvjaginsev won his game, but Najer lost. Women avoided draws - Kosintseva sisters won, but Kovalevskaya, Matveeva and Tairova lost. The score in the match is tied, 20-20.

Borislav Ivkov leads before the final round with 7/8. Miso Cebalo and Victor Korchnoi are half a point behind. In the final round Ivkov has White against Cebalo, and Korchnoi plays White against Mark Tseitlin (6). These games will determine the name of the new European champion.

Second and third rounds were successful for the Russians, who managed to take the lead, 15.5-14.5. The men's team recovered from the first day loss to 9.5-5.5 lead, less successdul is the women's team performance - 6-9. Evgeniy Najer and Nadezhda Kosintseva have the best individual scores in the Russian teams - 2.5 points, Zvjaginsev and Jakovenko have 2 points. The first half of the match ends tomorrow, the second half is to be concluded on August, 20.

There are two international tournaments underway in Montreal, Canada. Artyom Timofeev (Russia) and Kamil Miton (Poland) lead in the main event with 3 points after 4 rounds. Emil Sutovsky (Israel) and Pavel Eljanov (Ukraine) have 2.5, Boris Gulko and Alexander Onischuk collected 2 points, Ildar Ibragimov (all - USA), Oleg Korneev (Russia) and Victor Mikhalevsky (Israel) share the 7th-9th places with 1.5 points, and local GM Pascal Charbonneau has just half a point. Alexander Huzman (Israel) and Tomas Likavski (Slovakia) lead in the B tournament with 3 points, WGM and IM Irina Krush (USA) is half a point behind. Both events end on August 16.
