20.04.2005 Children’s festival in Dagomys
The most promising young chess players of St. Petersburg, who participated in the last two years' city championship finals – Maxim Matlakov and Nikita Vitiugov – won U14 and U18 championships of Russia and qualified for the world championship. Anish Giri, Daria Efremova (U12) and Olga Lelekova (U18) took the second places and qualified for the European championships. 12-years old Artiom Smirnov, Nastya Bodnaruk (who contrived to loose two concluding games in U14), Marina Lupik (U18) won bronze medals. It’s probably the first time when the young chess players from our city have taken so many medals (8!). Our congratulations to the champions and medalists, their coaches and parents!
Our players Vera Sokolova (U12) and Maxim Matlakov (the latter added another gold medal of U14) won two more gold medals in the Russian rapid championship.

20.04.2005 Club championship of Russia
Our strongest chess players have dispersed over other teams after the St. Petersburg chess federation withdrew the place in the Premier league of the club championship of Russia. Svidler plays for Kazan's “Ladja”, Alekseev became the head of “Lada” from Togliatti, Khalifman plays for “Termosteps” Samara, and Sakaev – for “Max Ven” Ekaterinburg. “TPS” from Saransk has become the most congenial team: three of our grandmasters – Popov, Ivanov and Yemelin are playing for this team. On the other hand, two teams from St. Petersburg will play in the Higher league, in which the teams will compete for the spot in the Premiere league – the team of the Junior Sports School of Chigorine’s Club (with Ionov, Loginov, Klimov, and other players from our city and the team of the Financial University (with Lugovoi, Vitiugov and some players from other cities). IM Vladimir Barsky, our correspondent at the Club championship, will inform our readers of the most interesting episodes and games of the Dagomys competition.

20.04.2005 Club championship of Russia
Three teams represent our city in the women's club championship of Russia, two of them are from the Saint Petersburg Financial University. The first team consists of five grandmasters, Sudakova and Korbut who come from Saint Petersburg are among them. Kirillova became the leader of the second team, experienced Bystriakova plays at a lower board, and the rest are the young students. Dushenok, Molchanova, Sirotkina, Rakitskaya play for the Junior Sports School of Chigorine’s Club. The first team would hardly keep the champion’s title, as there is a “monster” team ABC with the world champion Stefanova, European ex-champion Zhukova, and brilliant Kosintseva sisters among the participants.
