02.10.2005 NIGHT WATCH №4: WE WANT MORE MATCH-TOURNAMENTS!

(the report to follow)

"Yesterday's heroes" with Zviad Izoria

"I had a terrible impression of the play of Morozevich. I did not get the idea of a single move starting from Rh3. Topalov had a good luck yesterday – already by move 15 with little effort he got a big advantage. Few people on such a level will let such advantage slip through fingers. I think that Morozevich played this game too carelessly.

Leko’s play was difficult for understanding as well. He usually plays more soundly. It’s possible to say that it was an easy victory for Svidler.

I liked Anand’s play most of all, though, I think everything was prepared at home. There is almost nothing to say about the game – he just caught his opponent and beat him down.

Judit played good, however I was not impressed with Nb5 – perhaps it was the matter of miscalculation. Rxе8 was fairly obvious. To tell the truth, a variation with Bd4 is new for me. It was certainly prepared especially for this tournament – as here many play a system with e6 against Be3. I have no idea about the objective value of it, but it is almost impossible to handle such positions unprepared."

Next round forecast: Dr Petr Kiriakov, grandmaster

"Topalov-Adams. Topalov is on the rise, and he defeated Adams in Linares 2005, but the resut of that game had nothing to do with the opening, and the Nimzo-Indian defense is extremely solid. In case of 1.d4 I foresee a draw, and after 1.e4 I put money on Topalov, who possibly has a bomb against the Marshall Attack.

Kasimdzhanov-Anand ½-½. Kasimdzhanov will not repeat Polgar's mistake and fix a draw against the Caro-Kann (or the Slav).

Leko-Polgar ½-½. I don't think Leko has already recovered from his losses and is ready to play sharply for a win – a quick draw and a long-awaited day off.

Morozevich-Svidler 1-0. I risk to bet on Morozevich – he will have White for a third time in four games. I think we may see an interesting opening innovation."
