I.SMIKOVSKY. A PORTRAIT OF A CHESSPLAYER - VLADIMIR KRAMNIK (PART III)
In 1992 in Paris a rapid chess knockout tournament with participation of the best players of the world headed by world champion Garry Kasparov took place. There were no sensations – the rating favorite won the tournament. In the first round he had narrowly won a two-game micro-match against 17-years-old Vladimir Kramnik. This was the beginning of those two players' opposition.

I.SMIKOVSKY. A PORTRAIT OF A CHESSPLAYER - VLADIMIR KRAMNIK (PART II)
I suggest that readers do some exercises on solving various problems springing up on the chessboard and compare their standpoints with the opinion of one of the best players in the world. We will not examine the whole games. Here we have another goal – to concentrate on critical moments of the struggle.

I.SMIKOVSKY. A PORTRAIT OF A CHESSPLAYER - VLADIMIR KRAMNIK (PART I)
Having been offered to write about Vladimir Kramnik's chess creative work I did not have to think long before accepting. The only thing to do was to overcome certain intellectual doubts – does the IM, even if not the weakest one, has any right to discuss merits and demerits of the reigning Champion of the World? The work itself seemed interesting and exciting to me. I sincerely hope that it will bring some positive emotions to the readers as well.

I remember that I announced the possible didactic use of this work for the young chess players. Let's sort it out together. How does a chessplayer get in to the notorious elite?

S.Klimov. Portrait of a chess player - Veselin TOPALOV
Bulgarian GM Veselin Topalov is one of the brightest among modern chess players. From the middle of nineties he was having steady rating about 2700, in the period of "absolute rule" at Olympus he defeated Gary Kasparov (and in what stile!). Recently, after absolutely fantastic game and the result in "classics" in the world championship (until the semi-final he yielded the opponents merely half a point and in case of normal time control he wouldn't be defeated) with Elo 2757 he became fifth number in the rating list with inessential lag from the forth one (A.Morozevich) and the third one (V.Kramnik).

A.Lugovoi. Portrait of a chess-player - Vishi ANAND
A tiger from Madras. I scarcely know how to say more precisely. A tiger trips with velvet paws and attacks violently. And his flair ... is just fantastic! He makes misses as almost everybody, but this is the point. His hand saves him, it's a magical one, as if from Indian tales. It makes a move and doesn't miscalculate. Else this hand can make a draw in slightly worse position. Easily and without hesitation.

D.Evseev. Portrait of a chess player - Evgeny BAREYEV.
Perhaps for the first time I became more closely acquainted with creativity of Evgeny Bareyev, when studying books of Mark Dvoretsky. From these books I learnt that Evgeny had been a frequent visitor at sessions of the school of Dvoretsky-Yusupov, where he frequently delivered lectures and commented his own games. I was deeply impressed by the depth of his insight into chess.
