Today in the capital a chess festival is starting which consists of two tournaments. In the main event there are about 50 GMs including 13 with ELO over 2600. The prize fund has been risen to 2,500,000 rubles at the last moment. The tournament is organized by Moscow Chess Federation together with Russian State Social University. The Petersburg GMs V.Yemelin and S.Ionov take part in the event.

On 30th of January the tenth World Champion, Saint Petersburg born and bred Boris Spassky celebrates his 70th birthday. On this day in the Chigorin Chess Club a soiree will be held dedicated to this event. Its schedule contains the speeches of chessplayers who are well aware of the Leningrad period of life and creative work of the person whose jubilee is celebrated and also simultaneous exhibitions. GMs Mark Taimanov, Sergey Ivanov, Valery Loginov, Valery Popov and other well-known people will take part in the soiree which begins at 18:00. The entrance is free.
