17.04.2006 ZDENKO KOZUL AND EKATERINA ATALIK BECOME THE CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE
Croatian Zdenko Kozul and Turkish Ekaterina Atalik (recently Russian Polovnikova) won the European championships in Kusadasi, Turkey. Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine) and Tea Bosboom-Lanchava (Netherlands) got the silver.

17.04.2006 GOLDEN MAXIM
Maxim Matlakov, who was a full point behind the leader and half a point behind other two players, entered a six-way tie after his last-round win, and surpassed other competitors according to the Buchgolz. We congratulate the Russian champion U-16! Oleg Yuzhakov (Sverdlovsk Region) was awarded the second place, and Anton Klimov (Kemerovo Region) was placed third. St. Petersburg players Bazeev (U-14) and Rumyantseva (U-16) finished 4th in their age groups. These are medal-winners in the older age groups: Girls - U-14: Anastasia Savina (Moscow), Viktoria Bukhteeva (Moscow Region), Sofia Buzukashvili (Moscow); U-16: Olga Girya (Khanty-Mansiysk Region), Darja Ivanova (Moscow), Zoya Severyukhina (Udmurtia); U-18: Viktoria Tarasova (Saratov Region), Ekaterina Kharashuta (Novosibirsk region), Tatevik Airapetian (Lipetsk Region); Boys - U-14: Dmitry Lavrik (Vladimir Region), Andrey Gritsenko (Primorsky Region), Sergey Chekhov (Voronezh Region); U-18: Roman Nechepurenko (Bashkortostan), Pogos Nakhapetian (Penza Region), Dmitry Andreikin (Ryazan Region).

17.04.2006 BRONZE ANNA
Anna Styazhkina from St. Petersburg won the bronze medal in the Russian U-10 championship. She finished in a four-way tie for the first with 7/9. Alina Bivol from Moscow Region was awarded the gold, and Elza Khazieva from Tatarstan got the silver. Kalmyk Darsen Sanzhaev became U-10 champion among boys, two Muscovites, Emil Guseinov and Daniil Dubov, were half a point behind. In boys U-12 group our Anish Giri (7/9) was followed by Ivan Bukavshin (Rostov Region) and Ramil Sadykov (Tatarstan) - both 6.5. Polina Nagornaya from Rostov Region won the girls U-12 section, surpassing our Dina Bazhenova on tiebreak score (both have 7/9). Irina Baraeva from Cheliabinsk Region was third.

17.04.2006 SILVER DINA, GOLDEN ANISH
The Russian Junior championship in Dagomys are over. St. Petersburg players excelled in U-12 section. Dina Bazhenova tied for the first, got the silver medal and the right to represent Russia in the European girls championship, and Anish Giri became a champion of Russia and will be playing in the World championship. After the 9th round Kozul increased his lead to a full point. He has 7.5 points, Belov, Berescu, K.Georgiev, Ivanchuk and Nikolic have 6.5. Konstantin Sakaev has 5.5. Bosboom-Lanchava and Atalik-Polovnikova are still ahead of the women's championships with 7/9. Dembo, Zawadzka and Chelushkina are half a point behind.

During the whole year a demanding jury determined the best games of the month in a column meticulously kept up by Maxim Notkin. Now 36 best games of the year 2005 are presented to the most remarkable chess personalities (the number has reached 20 and continues to grow) in order to determine the year's laureate. The poll is to be concluded by the end of April, and then our special prize for the winner will be announced. We encourage the reader to take a look at the selection. 6 rounds have passed, and the best representatives of our city are showing the following results: U-10 - Styazhkina 5 points (2nd-4th places), Palchun 4 (6-13), U-12 - Bazhenova 4.5 (3-8), Giri 5 (1-3), U-14 - Efremova and Korchagina - both 4 (7-14), Bazeev 5 (2-3), U-16 - Rumyantseva 4.5 (5-6), Matlakov 4.5 (2-7), U-18 - Kuzevanova 4 (6-12), Lovkov 4.5 (2-4).

After four rounds the list of the most successful St. Petersburg representatives looks as follows: Kolesnikova, Stiazhkina and Palchun - 3 points (U-10), Klyuchik, Bazhenova, Giri and Donskov - 3 points (U-12), Korchagina, Shimanov and Bazeev - 3 points (U-14), Rumyantseva and Matlakov - 3.5 points, Shlakich - 3 points (U-16). Other players scored from 0.5 to 2.5 points. The 5th round takes place today.

Nothing has changed in the leaders' group in the men's continental championship: Ivanchuk, Kozul and Nikolic all scored 5.5/7, having drawn their 7th round games. 9 players including Muscovite Vladimir Belov have 5/7. Ekaterina Atalik, maiden name Polovnikova, caught up with Peptan and Lanchava - they also have 5.5/7. No games today.

Grandmaster Yury Razuvaev researches games of Akiba Rubinstein for many years. His book dedicated to the oustanding chess player is regarded as one of the best works in the renowned "Black series". The chapter from a new book by Yury Sergeyevich is written about the Rubinstein Gambit in the Four Knights Defense. Added to the "Theory and Practice" section.

After 6 rounds three players lead the men's event: Ivanchuk, Kozul and Nikolic, all having 5 points. Five players including Vladimir Belov are half a poitn behind. Lanchava and Peptan are in the lead in women's event, both having 5/6. None of the Russians managed to join the chase group of seven players with 4.5/6. Best Russian representatives Pogonina and Shadrina have 4/6.

The third round failed to please Petersburgers: only five players have 2.5/3: Kolesnikova (U-10), Azimova and Klyuchik (U-12), Bragina (U-14) and Matlakov (U-16). 21 juniors from St. Petersburg scored 2/3.

Having defeated the European champion Nisipeanu in the fourth game, Veselin Topalov won an exhibition match 3-1. This was an event dedicated to Bulgaria and Romania joining the EU.

10.04.2006 Junior championships in Dagomys
Two starting rounds in U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18 age groups are played. St. Petersburg is represented by 59 players (28 girls and 31 boy) in the Higher league alone. Dobronravina (U-10), Pavlova (U-12), Bragina and Korchagina (U-14), and Gaprindashvili (U-16, not related to the former world champion) won two games in girls tournaments. Only two boys were able to repeat this result in their sections: Polonovsky (U-12) and Shimanov (U-14).

Russian junior championships start today in traditional gathering place - Dagomys. Classical chess events will be followed by rapid chess. Junior team championships take start on April 20 - this kind of competition is intriduced for the first time in the history of Russian chess.

In the first round of the European championship in Kusadasi, Turkey, Konstantin defeated Greek GM Mastrovasilis. Today he will play against multiple Armenian champion Ashot Anastasian, with Black pieces again.
