17.02.2006 Postflight analysis is yet to come
22-years-old Georgian grandmaster Baadur Jobava won the “Aeroflot Open 2006”, Viorel Bologan took the second place, Krishnan Sasikiran is on the third place and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov occupies the fourth place. All these players scored 6,5 out of 9. The number of games played with Black was considered first of all during the ranging of places. St.Petersburg chessplayers’ results: E.Alekseev - 5,5, V.Popov, D.Yevseev, K.Sakaev and A.Khalifman – 4,5, N.Vitiugov – 3. 12 (!) participants scored the same 6,5 out of 9 in the second strongest tournament. And again the winner was a Georgian – D.Arutinian. St.Petersburg players had the following results: A.Lugovoi – 5,5, S.Ivanov and S.Klimov – 5, S.Ionov – 4. Leningrad region representative D.Linchevsky scored the same number of points (4).

16.02.2006 The tail has landed and the wings are about to land
Two mass tournaments of the “Aeroflot open 2006” finished yesterday. D.Petrosian (Armenia) won the “B” group tournament having scored 7,5 out of 9, and Wang Li became the winner of the “C” group tournament, having scored 8 out of 9. Russian chessplayer O.Kozlov scored the same number of points. St.Petersburg players did not win laurels: R.Kashtanov showed the best result (“B” tournament, 6 points, the 19th place). The games of the last, 9th round of two main tournaments will take place today. P.Eljanov and K.Georgiev are the leaders of the main tournament, they have 6 out of 8. Eight participants (Russian players V.Malakhov, A.Motylev and D.Yakovenko are among them) scored half a point less. Our chess players, alas, are solving local problems. E.Alekseev, V.Popov and K.Sakaev scored 4,5, D.Yevseev and A.Khalifman got 4, N.Vitiugov has 2,5. There are eight leaders, who scored 6 out of 8 in the second strongest tournament. A.Lugovoi scored 5, S.Ivanov has 4,5, S.Klimov got 4 and S.Ionov scored 3,5 points.

15.02.2006 Mark Taimanov wins 15:0. Photographic report
The other day a soiree dedicated to the 80th birthday of St.Petersbug chess veteran Mark Taimanov took place in the big auditorium of Saint-Petersburg University of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mark Evgenievich gave simuls on 15 boards. Heads of St.Petersburg universities, professors and students of Saint-Petersburg University of Humanities and Social Sciences, national and honoured artists took part in simultaneous display. There was a whitewash – the grandmaster defeated everyone, one after another, in the last encounter he won against the head of Saint-Petersburg University of Humanities and Social Sciences A.Zapesotsky. M.Taimanov dedicated his win to his wife Nadezhda, a graduate of this University. We offer you pictures of this event, which we got from the press service of the university.

15.02.2006 World Chess Championship 2007 – in St.Petersburg?
Today, at noon a press conference of Kalmykia and FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov took place in the Moscow office of Interfax. It was announced that a match between Kramnik and Topalov will take place in the capital of Kalmykia this year in the middle of September. The prize fund will make 1,2 million dollars (total cost is 1,8 mln). Answering a question about world championship 2007, Ilyumzhinov announced that it will be carried out according to the same scheme as the last year’s championship in San Luis. Argentina, Singapore, and ST.PETERSBURG pretend to carry out the championship.

In Mexico finished young master’s tournament. FIDE world ex-champion Ruslan Ponomariov, tied the first place with Vallejo, having scored 6,5 out of 9. Other players’ results: Nakamura 6, Dominguez 5,5, Bruzon 5, Volokitin 4,5, Cheparinov 4, Karjakin 3,5, Leon 2, Felgaer 1,5.

Bulgarian grandmaster K.Georgiev won a big open tournament in Gibraltar with 8,5 out of 10. Englishman N.Short and Israeli E.Sutovsky finished second equal with 7,5 points. Tiebreak score arranged the players who tied for 4th-10th with 7 points in the following way: 4.V.Akopian (Armenia), 5.А.Areshchenko, 6.Z.Efimenko (both - Ukraine), 7.М.Gurevich (Turkey), 8.Z.Gyimesi (Hungary), 9.А.Shirov (Spain) and 10.S.Volkov (Russian). Having won in the 19th round, V.Korchnoi scored 6,5 points.
