10.01.2006 Corus Chess 2006 in Wijk aan Zee
On Saturday, the 14th of January Corus Chess 2006 festival starts in the Dutch city Wijk aan Zee. It consists of three tournaments. The A tournament has 19th category (average rating is 2716). The participants are Topalov, Anand, Aronian, Leko, Ivanchuk, Gelfand, Bacrot, Mamedyarov, Adams, Sokolov, Kamsky, Tiviakov, Karjakin and van Wely. The B tournament (15th category, average rating 2602) will be played by Navara, Naiditsch, Almasi, Motylev, Vescovi, Beliavsky, Cheparinov, Carlsen, Jobava, Stellwagen, Smeets, L'Ami, Koneru and Lahno. The play of the Turkish-Russian couple S. and E. Atalik (Polovnikova) makes the C tournament (9th category, average rating is 2458) curious for us to watch. The schedule of playing is the same for all the tournaments: January 14-17: rounds 1-4, January 19-22: rounds 5-8, January 24-25: rounds 9-10, January 27-29: rounds 11-13. 10.01.2006 P.Keres Memorial
Three most titled participants, A.Karpov, R.Kasimjanov and V.Ivanchuk, having got 7 points out of 9, shared a win in the tournament devoted to the 90th anniversary of P.P.Keres in Tallinn. The Swedish GM E.Berg (5.5 points) got the fourth place, fifth and sixth places were shared by Russians: N.Vitiugov from Petersburg and Muscovite GM V.Kosyrev (both 4.5 points), another Petersburger GM V.Yemelin finished on the seventh place, followed by Estonian R.Liiva (3.5 points), Swedish E.Agrest (1.5) and famous A.Shirov (0.5). I.Berzina from Lithuania was the best one among women (5.5 points out of 7), second and third places were shared by V.Golubenko from Estonia and P.Cramling from Sweden (both got 4.5 points). V.Cmilyte from Lithuania got the fourth place (4 points), Russian T.Grabuzova ended up on the fifth place (3 points), Lithuanian D.Ciuksyte finished sixth (2.5 points), seventh and eighth places were shared by T.Fomina and M.Tsiganova (2 points), both representing Estonia.

10.01.2006 Hastings Congress
07.01.2006. The history of chess competitions in Hastings, England, dates from the 19th century. The tournament in 1895, won by G.Pilsbery, is very famous. And the Hastings Congresses are held annually from year 1920 (they were not held during the war), and among its winners are Alekhin and Capablanca, Botvinnik and Smyslov, Tal and Spassky, Keres and Bronstein, Karpov and Korchnoi, Larsen and Reshevsky... This time the main competition of the Congress was the Swiss with more than one hundred people playing. Ukrainian GM V.Neverov won with 8 points out of 10. V.Belov, who won the event last year, got the fifth place with 7 points.

10.01.2006 Denis Yevseev got the second place in Reggio Emilia
07.01.2006. GM Denis Yevseev from Petersburg got the second place in the round-robin tournament in Italy with 6 points out of 9. He was left behind by his compatriot K.Landa (7 points), and followed by Croatian M.Cebalo (5,5 points). O.Zimina from Russia also took part in the tournament; she scored 4 points and shared 7th-8th places. 10 players took part in the competition.

10.01.2006 It goes without Russians
06.01.2006. The place of Russian V.Kramnik who withdrew from Wijk aan Zee (13-29.01.06) has been given to the junior world champion S.Mamedyarov from Azerbaijan. As a result, there will be no Russians in the year's first supertournament. Alexander Motylev takes part in Wijk aan Zee B. 06.01.2006. Finished with 7/9, GM Sergey Ivanov from Petersburg became one of the first equal in a traditional New Year tournament in Stockholm, Sweden. According to tie-break, our compatriot got the second place behind E.Rozentalis from Lithuania. 127 chess players took part in the competition, including 20 GMs.

10.01.2006 Blitz on a Christmas Eve
06.01.2006. The second annual blitz tournament held by chesspro.ru took place in Moscow yesterday. As a year ago, a double round-robin final was played by 12 people. The results are: Grischuk and Morozevich – 15 points out of 22, Svidler – 14 points, Korotylev and Tkachiev – 12,5 points, Dreev – 11,5 points, Kobalia and Shipov – 10 points, Grachev, Savchenko and Jakovenko – 8,5 points, and Malakhov – 5,5 points. Alexander Grischuk won the tie break.

10.01.2006 Kramnik withdrew from Wijk aan Zee
05.01.2006. Vladimir Kramnik withdrew from the supertournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. The tournament starts on the 13th of January. Kramnik has problems with his health that do not allow him to play in tournaments during several coming months.

05.01.2006. FIDE has published the final list of participants for the knockout tournament aimed to define the participants of the FIDE world championship-2007 and the pairs of the first round. So the pairs are: L.Aronian-M.Carlsen, P.Leko-M.Gurevich, R.Ponomariov-S.Rublevsky, B.Gelfand-R.Kasimjanov, E.Bacrot-G.Kamsky, A.Grischuk-V.Malakhov, J.Polgar-E.Bareev and A.Shirov-M.Adams.
